There is no doubt that when it comes to safety gear you get what you pay for. If you are under the false impression that cheap safety gear is every bit as good as expensive safety gear then you couldn't be more wrong and it's unfortunate that too many new riders find out how wrong they are after it's too late. I can tell you from experience, that the pain of buying the right equipment, is far less than the pain that a good dose of road rash will leave you with.

I don't think anyone would argue that when it comes to motorcycles the number one piece of safety equipment is your motorcycle helmet. The right motorcycle helmet can make all the difference in the world in the event of a crash. In fact, it can be the difference between walking away and being carried away and that is a SIGNIFICANT difference, I think we would all agree.

There are a number of things you should consider when selecting the right helmet for you but the key really is FOR YOU. It doesn't matter what your buddy buys or what the guy down the street with the Hayabuse is sporting, what matters is what works for you. You need to find a motorcycle helmet that you will be happy with and that fits your head, otherwise you will be tempted to NOT wear it. That's a mistake.

Some of the factors that you would want to consider would be:
Helmet Fit - Does it feel good on your head Liner - Is the liner removable and washable? Trust me...it will get funky. Visor Function - Is the visor easy to operate? How about with gloves on? Helmet Weight - typically the lighter the helmet the less fatigue it will transfer to you. Safety - Does it meet SNELL or DOT standards or both? Road Noise - Is it too loud? A loud helmet can give you a headache over time. Price - Sure price is a factor. Shop where you can save money. Ebay has some great deals. Design - How does it look? Proud to wear it on bike night? A helmet you like, is a helmet you will wear.

These are only a few of the things you need to consider when buying motorcycle helmets so make sure you give some consideration to all of them. Remember two things when it comes to safety gear, you get what you pay for and if you like it, then you will wear it. So make sure you invest the right amount of money and buy a motorcycle helmet that you will love wearing and enjoy being seen in.

This may seem shallow but the cold hard facts are if you like the helmet, then you will wear the helmet.

There aren't many topics that will stir up more passion than whether or not motorcycle riders have the right to ride without a helmet. Here's a look at the different types of motorcycle helmets available.

HALF-SHELL The half-shell helmet covers only the top of your head. They give you the least amount of protection. Many riders like these helmets for comfort reasons. They are probably the next best thing to going without a helmet.

THREE-QUARTER-SHELL These helmets cover the sides of your head and ears but leave your chin unprotected. Some of these come with face shields. Some of the face shields can be raised or lowered which give you good eye protection.

FULL-FACE Full-face helmets cover the riders chin and more of the face. These provide the most protection. They come with movable face shields for eye protection.

MODULAR Modular helmets are full-face helmets that hinge at about ear level so the entire front of the helmet can be raised or lowered. This can be used to talk or take a drink without removing the helmet.

DOT AND SNELL Whatever type of helmet you choose, make sure it meets DOT standards. Helmet manufacturers put the DOT sticker on the helmet. Some helmets are also Snell certified, which means they meet the standards of the Snell Memorial Foundation, which has been testing helmets since the 1950s.

When doing a motorcycle helmet review, you have to look at the pros and cons of the different types of helmets. I like the feel of the half-shell, but I don't like the wind noise you get when riding with this type of helmet. I guess ear plugs are for that.

I like the three-quarter-shell for cutting out wind noise so you can hear that great Harley sound. This type helmet doesn't give you the face protection you might want, but it's cooler on those hot days.

The full-face is great for highway riding because it give you the most protection from bugs, rain, stones and other things that always seem to hit your head on long highway trips.

It probably wouldn't hurt to have a couple of different helmets for the different types of riding you do.

You also may want to consider taking with you some credit cards or traveler's checks because you don't want to get stuck on the road with no money. After all your motorcycle does take gas to run, and you don't want to run out and be stuck on the highway.

So when you get ready to start your cross country ride, make sure that you have the things that you will need. This way you won't have any issues that you can't take care of on the road. Cross country rides can be extremely fun if they're well planned and everything is thought of. Just remember to have fun and be safe when you're out on the open road, even if you want to seem like a rebel. You don't want to get hurt because you're doing something stupid while on the road.

Full-face motorcycle helmets are designed to cover the entire head and face. It features a hard shell that extends from the brow over the cranium to the base of the skull at the top of the neck. This hard safety shell also rides forward along the cheekbones to encompass the jaws and chin. A clear visor also helps to keep the wind, rain and any dust or debris from affecting your vision while riding.

Full-face helmets are generally considered the safest of all the styles, since they cover the largest area of a rider's head and face. Their main disadvantage, however, is that they are the heaviest of all the helmet styles, and may cause neck fatigue when riding in strong winds or for long periods of time.

Within the full face helmet category are two individual styles: racing helmets, which are very sleek and light; and dirt bike helmets, which is the lightest full face helmet version available. Since it does not feature a visor, goggles are recommended.

The Three quarter shell motorcycle helmet is similar to its full-face counterpart, except it does not wrap around the entire face. Instead, the shell extends from the brow over the cranium to the base of the neck and forward over the ears. A chinstrap is used to secure the helmet in place.

Some benefits of the three-quarters face helmet (which, by the way offers many of the same safety benefits of a full face helmet), is the ease in which riders can communicate while wearing it, and how quickly it can be removed without causing sight blockage
The half shell motorcycle helmets, often called a beanie helmet are the least intrusive of all the helmet styles. They cover only the top half of the head. Weighing the least, the half shell is very light, does not block the ears, and offers the least wind resistance. Unfortunately, this style also offers the least protections of all the helmets.

In order to meet the legal requirements for those states that have a mandatory motorcycle helmet law, all motorcycle helmets must meet the minimum Department of Transportation (DOT) standard. Helmets meeting this criterion will sport a safety sticker acknowledging DOT acceptance. And approval.

SNELL, a non-profit organization that sets a more stringent voluntary standard of helmet safety also offers an approved sticker for helmet buyers. Helmets that are both DOT and SNELL approved are considered the safest helmets available to today's bikers since they are designed to meet the highest standards of protection within the helmet industry.
